Our Environment
We work to protect, restore and regenerate the grasslands and woodlands
We are on a journey to manage our livestock and business in a way that regenerates the landscape.
Conservation
In the 1980s, we realised we needed to conserve the remanent native trees and woodlands that were left and plant more trees and shrubs. Since then, and with the support of organisations such as Landcare Australia, we have planted ten of thousands of trees and shrubs across our landscape, creating shelter and habitat for our livestock and native biodiversity. We have been members of the Landcare movement in Australia for 30 years, at times chairing our regional body and presently on the board of our Grazing Advisory Board.
Holistic Management
In the early 2000s, an alternative approach to conventional farming was being talked about. Rod and Jenny wanted to learn more and completed an Holistic Management course, this was followed by an Resource Consulting Services Australia (RCS) grazing course and many more grazing, animal and environmental management courses. Since then, we have managed our farm holistically, considering the animals, environment, people and finances in every decision.
Regenerative Agriculture
We manage our Merinos in a time-controlled grazing plan which allows the sheep to have high quality nutrition and gives the environment the impact and rest it requires to regenerate. We compliment this management with organic and biodynamic fertilizers, diverse mixed species plantings of trees, shrubs, grasses and legumes and protect and repair waterways through erosion control and fencing.
Biodiversity
We are lucky to share the home of many native species including echidnas, wombats, kangaroos and wallabies, rakali, many snakes and lizards and more than 55 species of birds. We’ve worked with the Rivers of Carbon team to reintroduce Pygmy Perch, a native fish, back into our waterways and hope that we may one day be able to do the same for other species local to the area.
